Enclosed Trailer With 10-m Tower

The following photographs show a Model VT-1 sodar mounted in an enclosed trailer equipped with an automatic retractable roof, solar power system, 10-m telescoping tower, anemometer and wind turbine.  The automatic retractable roof closes when it rains or snows and reopens when the precipitation ceases.  This capability is particularly useful for off-grid applications in the northern latitudes where it is necessary to keep the sodar clear of snow in winter.  Other alternatives for dealing with snowfall usually involve heating, which requires extra power capacity.  The automatic retractable roof uses very little power.  The telescoping 10-m tower which serves as a platform for the anemometer and wind turbine retracts and stores on the roof for traveling.  It is deployed by sliding it off the roof, rotating it down, securing the base to the trailer bumper, and winching it up into position.  This system was delivered to Superior Renewable Energy LLC in September 2003.
